As the Labor Day Weekend approaches, the Hurricane Monument becomes a gathering place where the community of Islamorada honors the 700 who perished in the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane. At the foot of the monument is a crypt where 300 cremated remains are placed. In the after math of the Hurricane, bodies were gathered all over the island and cremated and buried.
